If you are a new vehicle owner, or an old vehicle owner that has just now realized the importance of understanding your own vehicle, its parts, and the maintenance it needs, then chances are, you sometimes feign understanding when talking to a mechanic about what is to be done to your car. This would be all right if your car mechanic is trustworthy and comes recommended by your family. However there are a ton of car repair centers around that will take advantage of your seeming naivety on what car repair really is about,

Here are some word meanings that may be able to help you sort out conversations with your car mechanic.

1. Automatically adjusting brakes – this is a system for your braking mechanism that allows it to keep on adjusting to the wear and tear of your break pads.

2. Axles
– axles are crossbeams under your vehicle that supports the weight of the entire car. You will have two sets of these crossbeams, one in front and one in the rear. They are connected to the spindles with king pins.

3. Spindles- spindles are the devices where your hub and your wheel bearings are on top of.

4. Brake flushing – sometimes, your mechanic will tell you that your braking system needs a flushing. This means that it has to be flooded with alcohol or brake fluid to remove water, dust and other debris.

5. Brake balance – If your braking system is unbalanced, this means that the force distributed between the front and rear wheels is not at its right ratio.

6. Brake Fluid – is the glycol-based hydraulic fuel that makes your brake system work without glitch. This should be replaced regularly to prevent corrosion in the brake system.

7. Master Cylinder – in a hydraulic system, the master cylinder is responsible for pushing all fluids throughout your vehicle’s systems.

8. Wheel Cylinder – this is adjacent to the master cylinder and is responsible for pushing the brake shoes outward against the brake drums, to essentially, make your vehicle stop.

9. Shock Absorber – This is a device that turns motion into heat by forcing oil into an internal passage in a tubular housing. This is your protection against swaying too much and banging your head when you maneuver your vehicle.

10. Radiator – the radiator in your vehicle is much like your radiator at home, this is where the coolant travels to before going back and reused in the engine. This is a vital part in cooling your car’s engine and systems.

When trying to make sense of your car and the maintenance that should be done to it, it is essential that you do not get lost in the terminologies. Your car owner’s manual can help greatly so always have it handy. Also, you can download tons of stuff from the internet, or even buy your own book on how to take care of your car. Aside from understanding the terminology used in car repair and maintenance, you might be able to learn more about keeping your car in good condition.
